Many Black travelers describe Chiang Mai — and Thailand more broadly — as physically safe, with everyday interactions shaped more by curiosity and colorism than by hostility.
That said, colorism is real. Preferences for lighter skin and occasional stereotypes or ignorant comments can surface, particularly in more local spaces or among older residents. Long-term Black residents often note that the most overtly racist behavior they encounter comes from other foreigners, while Thai bias tends to show up more subtly — through social hierarchy or differential treatment rather than confrontation.
For most Black senior travelers, the experience is best described as safe, often warm, but not immune to ignorance.
